MES implementation optimizes tool logistics

The idea of optimizing the use and management of milling and turning tools and using an MES for this purpose is obvious. Tool logistics in particular opens up many opportunities in manufacturing to save money, time and organizational effort.

In the Hummingbird MES, a tool database can be set up and, if desired, linked to any ERP system for tool ordering.

Why not use the tool database created in a leading CAM system?

The Hummingbird MES can be synchronized comprehensively, can pull all necessary data from this software, write it back and implement management processes automatically. The hyperMILL^® CAM software from OPEN MIND, which can be seamlessly integrated, is suitable for this interaction. It already comes with a comprehensive tool database including interfaces to databases from leading tool manufacturers.

In this constellation, our MES becomes the central setup station and handles all aspects of tooling. It transmits the orders for setup, provides all data for assembly, measurement and storage, and passes this information on to the toolmaker and/or machine operator.

Production-relevant data for identification and production are collected and read out via a DataMatrix code on the holder of a tool. Usage statistics generated on this basis allow conclusions to be drawn about which tools were used and how often, and provide support for traceability and further standardization.
